Wednesday – In return
So, since Shep was kind enough to include the 12 Days of Christmas last week the least I could do was return the favour. If I recall correctly he had planned on serving up Navy SEAL.
Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to apply for the SEALs? Well, I took the liberty of doing a little online research. If you’re older than 28, a non-US citizen, or a high school drop-out I’m afraid you’re out of luck. But really its the Physical Screening Test (PST) that we are interested in. To qualify for SEAL training you must be able to complete the following regimen:
Swim 500-yards (457 m) using breast and/or sidestroke in less than 12 minutes and 30 seconds
10-minute rest
Perform a minimum of 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
2-minute rest
Perform a minimum of 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
2-minute rest
Perform a minimum of 6 pull-ups (no time limit)
10-minute rest
Run 1 ½ miles (2.4 km) wearing TENNIS SHOES and SHORTS in under 11 minutes.
I would love at some point to try this out. I wonder would anyone else be up for a trip to the pool? Okay, bonus points to anyone who knows what SEAL stands for, WITHOUT looking it up online!
Technique: Back squat (3,3,3,3,3)
Workout: Navy SEAL
For time
1000 m row
50 thrusters (35lbs/45lbs)
30 pull-ups

Drown proofing.

Jump into a pool blind folded with your hands tied behind your back and you’ll find out , I believe its call grace under extreme pressure
no tone…
PS The solution to the problem is to figure out to forget both the blind fold and the rope and kick yourself to the surface so you can breathe before you panic an die.
PPS Don’t ask me how I know …its top secret

No tone, thanks for adding a bit of intrigue… It’s actually seen as a very easy test in their world. But you are right, all they are really looking at is grace under pressure. They have other similar tests all revolving around the same concept… put you under water, put you under duress, make you do something to improve your situation, and see how you react. As I understand it, the hardest part is acknowledging to yourself that they won’t let you die and putting that out of your mind so that you can fix whatever needs fixing in a calm manner. Interesting but smart way to train calm under pressure.

I think I’d prob pee my bathing suit, barf a little in my mouth, then flail until an angry sergeant yanked me out of the water…not seal material…

No Tone- Sort of how its done.. the trick to let yourself sink rapidly., and drive off the bottom of the pool, not kicking as in the traditional “swimming sense”, but maybe that is what you meant anyways.
Dan- Regrettably, a few have died in recent years in the more advanced serials of these drills (involving long breath holds and actives such as under-water knot tying… of your respirator). Speaks to how bad the candidates want it.
Kermit- Courtenay and I both coached elite swimming as our primary occupation for about ten years each, so if anyone actually wants to hit the pool, let us know.

Golden showers are much more interesting then being drown proofed with a bunch of dudes who will prolly rape you at a hazing party.
