Whats the Deal with Thigh Gap?

Whats the Deal with Thigh Gap?

Thigh gap… are you kidding me?

As an older brother of a 18 year old sister I’ve witnessed my share of wardrobe meltdowns and bad hair days. I have seen hissy fits and anger arise from such things.  Girls have a way with that.

I thought I had heard of every insecurity a female in the 21st century could possibly have. I was wrong.

I was introduced to thigh gap the other day. The gap between a females legs. Apparently women strive for this. I was chatting with my roommate about it the other night and I made a point of sharing my thoughts.

“This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard”, was not far off my original statement.

I proceeded to google thigh gap and came across a number of different sites saying they had the fastest and most effective ways to develop a thigh gap. I only laughed harder when I read the tips.

1. Avoid exercises that bulk up your legs.

2. Avoid over eating.

3. Get aerobic exercise.

I just chuckled to myself. 1 and 2 are thoughts I have never had in my life. Ever.

I am not a girl, but I assume they feel pressure to look a certain way, dress a certain way and eat certain foods. Most of the time to look a certain way, whether that’s for attraction purposes or just to feel good about themselves.

Let me say that, I am not attracted to this “thigh gap”, in fact I want me some thigh friction in my ladies. Strong and and defined legs are far more appealing to me than broomsticks with hips.

CrossFit has done a great job building the “strong is the new sexy” or”strength is beauty” mantras. Slowly it seems girls are coming around to the idea of being strong and fit instead of skinny and frail and I think its for the better. Some men out there are still intimidated at the thought of strong women, but those are the men who I like to call “dumb”.

Men, post to comments if you think thigh gap is sexy or not.

Women, post to comments if you have ever desired said thigh gap.

Text message from my mother just in: “Good thing for you Tom likes muscular legs better than thigh gap.”

Women who naturally have thin legs and a gap between them are sexy too. There’s no reason to demean any type of body in favour of another (even if you’re demeaning against the grain).

That said, I agree that if you don’t have this naturally, the pressure to obsess over it, or to starve oneself/over-exercise to achieve it is yet another terrible example of society’s obsession with manipulating peoples’ body-image. Most of us could literally never have a thigh gap (absent surgery, which let’s be honest, it’s probably been done), and it would be unhealthy to wish for one. I personally have (good thing for me) never wished for a thigh gap.

Also, as Emily’s mother has pointed out, those of us in this category are lucky that many people find us attractive even with our hugely gigantic touching legs (the horror).

Tom what does it mean if you have a knee gap?

If I have a gap, am I allowed to compete as a woman?

The upper thigh part that fills in that possible gap is my favorite – go ahead and ask Caroline! I love me some upper thigh.

Who gives a damn, gap or no gap, inner thigh buffet baby.

There used to be a time in my life when this said thigh gab seemed appealing, however… I have come to the realization that that’s just a genetic formation. Some women are born that way and develope that and some women don’t. For those of you who know who I am, and a good junk of the rest of us ladies at crossfit know that there’s no way my thighs wouldn’t touch unless you cut half my thighs off. A good strong thigh is sexy… But all women are beautiful, gap or no gap.

As you all know, I love a good debate. Tom, you assume correctly re societal pressures…. But i need to point out that the mantra of getting sexier by being stronger or more fit, is just pushing the same old appearance-based misogyny that pervades our society and makes me sick. When will women’s value equate to what we DO before how we look? Please don’t call this rant “political correctness” as if it’s pejorative. International Women’s Day was last weekend. We have a very long way to go.
    *end rant*

Thanks for saying that Wendy. I went with the watered down version, because I was le tired from my much debating the other day. Hah.

We all ignored Tom’s comment guidelines. Transcommenters.

I can’t say I’ve been envious of women with thigh gap, but I’ve always been curious about switching bodies with either a really short or really thin woman. I wonder how different it would be? Could I carry 5 bags of groceries? Would I be more nervous about walking alone at night? Would I be constantly turning down men asking me out?
I think I’d prefer to be back in my own body at the end of the day – since it’s the one I’m most comfortable in. The external pressure women get from society about how to look is ridiculous, but it is possible to ignore it. It makes me sad and uncomfortable when my super attractive, successful women friends are so worried about how their body looks. There’s not much I can say or do to change how they feel about themselves, but I still try.
I do believe the “strong is the new sexy” campaign is not ideal as Wendy mentions, but I do like the idea that it’s promoting “strength” for women is better than “thin”. At least now it’s seems ok to not always be the “weaker” sex…
Thigh gap or no thigh gap – Rock what you Got Sister!

It doesn’t matter the size or shape of your thighs as long as you’re seemed to be healthy and fit.

I used to want thigh gap. That’s why I lived in basketball shorts for 8 years – I thought it hid the circumference of my legs, or at least increased the ambiguity about what was underneath the shorts. Looking back, I don’t think I fooled anyone.

I jerk off on the internet in my office almost everyday (not weekends). I find women on the internet with thigh gap and without it. And then I let loose!

BTW Wendy, there are ample studies that parents prefer they’re best looking children……beauty will always be a commodity. DEAL!
