This past Saturday I lead the warm up at a Boys and Girls Club of BC event “The Race for Kids”. It was the 3rd year in a row a member of the House of Shepherd has led this warm up. Mikey Barahona stepped up and did it last year.

Todd and Chris Warm Up

That’s Hot Toddy helping me out in the picture there. Todd has worked with them for years and it was he who introduced me to this event.

Samson stretch!

So why am I telling you this? Well I firmly believe that we all have to help out – Somehow and some way. The word “philanthropy” is too often solely associated with affluence and the endowment of a building or millions of dollars for a cause.

However the word’s meaning is not the same shade:

Philanthropy (from Greek φιλανθρωπία) etymologically means “love of humanity” in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing “what it is to be human” on both the benefactors’ (by identifying and exercising their values in giving and volunteering) and beneficiaries’ (by benefiting) parts. (Wikipedia)

Pretty sure you don’t have to be Warren Buffet to be a philanthropist and have a deep love of humanity. The rich own everything else. They don’t get to own that word as well. 😉

I’ve made monetary donations to various organizations for years. I also donate personal training packages to the B and G Club Silent Auction Gala every year and bring my apprentices in to honour these packages. It felt good to do this warm up for the B and G Club and maybe, just maybe, I even got an hour of better sleep because of it.

So I challenge everyone of you to go out and volunteer your time somewhere and sometime in the near future. Pick a cause and give your time. There is no greater way to lead than by example.

In the words of our brother Andrew “Nutts” Nuttal: “Live Life to the fullest… Make a difference”.

Surely there are many of you who do this already. Please post below what you do to make a difference.
