Someone ought to come up with a paleo challenge that isn’t about losin body fat cause I want those shoes and dammit, I got no fat to lose! How about a most beautifully creative and delicious yet simple paleo meal. Or even better, a crossfit themed art competition! Yes!! Dammit, I want those shoes!!!

Alcohol is by far the hardest thing, throws me off the wagon every time! Any recipes for paleo Guinness? Ferment an oul bit of squash maybe?
By Prof 31 Jan 2012
I agree with Scott. Why would some of us (e.g. me, Vincent, etc.) do this — I recently had a DEXA scan as I was a subject for a study at SFU. It estimated I was 10% body fat. Given that the error in that figure could be as much as 3% — at 7-13% body fat (and look in the mirror Leyland….! if there is an error it’ll probably be on the lower end) I really do not need to lose body fat. Gain some muscle maybe but not lose fat.

Where to begin…
Alcohol is by far the hardest. I am ashamed to admit that I had my first proper cheat this weekend. My second night of drinking since the challenge began turned into 4am burgers and cheddar-bacon fries at the Roxy Burger, which then turned into a greasy breakfast burrito next-day brunch. Amazing how a few (dozen) drinks turns into a few (dozen) hours off of the paleo wagon. I was smart the next night by sticking to water at a friend’s housewarming party…. No one said anything at the time, but yesterday I had a few e-mails asking if I am pregnant. I had to explain that it is my aversion to the weight gain that comes from real buns from real ovens that is keeping me dry for three more weeks.
The punishment for my night out will come on the weekend. Each member of our team has chosen a workout reflecting their personal weaknesses to use as punishment. I am dreading the Wallball Fran I have coming to me on Saturday after class.
My goals now are the same as they have been: WOD 4 times per week; fast for 14 hours/day; only zone balanced meals and snacks, NO MORE DRINKING and keep all those paleo cheats (little bits of chocolates, fruit, nuts) to a minimum. I am using a spreadsheet to track my progress daily to make sure I stay on track.
And as for how our team plans to win? Well, I don’t think it would hurt to drop off a batch of these at the gym: http://www.annaolson.ca/files/Maple_Pecan_Chocolate_Squares.pdf. May the source of the excess weight I I am losing be the source of the best cheat you have in six weeks.

Well, unlike the other prof, this one has always struggled to keep off fat most of my Italian life, until I discovered the wonders of a paleo diet. The current challenge has come at a perfect time to try to tone up a bit more, post-Christmas, but not sure how much fat will come off.
I did think of a new strategy that might fool the calipers – I’m going to shave off all my body hair just before the pinch – should be worth a few mm’s.

I am down 5-6 lbs and some belly inches
But
I realize
I don’t like feeling hungry….and I can certainly be fat and gluten free
Except for alcohol……I eat Paleo nearly 100% of the time. I could use for vegetable, but basically I just like that kind of food. My roommates in college used to laugh and call it “patty’s meat diet” back when the low fate rage was in
Robb Wolf told me that I would eventually satiate myself with meat and fat and not be hungry…
I am forced to call bullshit on this (maybe alcohol fucks something up here)
I can eat 40 blocks of Meat and 80 blocks of fat a day, no problem
Without portion control…………..I am F@#ked
By Robb Wolf 31 Jan 2012
This is weird…I’ve never heard of alcohol causing a problem, be it with relationships, socially or metabolically…
The Big-three I see with fat loss: food, sleep, exercise. Sleep is likely THE most importnat part of that, but folks can figure out ways to shit the bed in any of these areas. Problem(s) with booze: destroys quality sleep, blocking fat-loss potential. Promotes bad food choices (your mouth become a vacuum cleaner at 3 am at the taco truck). Makes you suck at exercise.
We saw this in our realtors. We could get them reasonably lean (for the general population) but not all that lean by CrossFit standards. Due to the nature of their jobs (shaking hands and kissing babies) and their psychology (they were fucking drunks) it was counter productive on many levels to endeavor towards getting “really lean” as that meant “less booze.”
Portion control: Eat less.
By Bus 31 Jan 2012
I am not doing the challenge this year, but ever since T-Bear called me ‘skinny fat’ last year, I have been eating about 80% Paleo.
Even though I unsubscribed to the FB group (ha, Lars – it isn’t just you!) I check in all the time and read what people are eating, check out recipes etc.
And I found this cake, on PaleOMG … and it might be one of the best things I have ever eaten… and it only takes 2 minutes.
So ya, thanks to the Paleo Challenge, I now have an addiction to cake.
By Shep 31 Jan 2012
I too am guilty of the alcohol cheat. Only on weekends though.
To be honest I’ve been pretty tight on the food. Still eating fruit but definitely more vegetables.
Patty – You want to lose weight? I say 10 blocks a day strict paleo zone. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got. Try it dude. Count your booze as carbohydrates when you drink.
I am a big believer in a strict paleo zone nutrition strategy. It will provide the portion control for anyone. That can mean eating less or in the case of us ectomorphs, it can mean we get enough calories to gain lean muscle mass.
Which is a good thing.
Vegas this weekend. Might be a cheat or two on the horizon.
By mamacita 31 Jan 2012
speaking of paleo & meat….
T-Bear or Dash, is it possible for you to find out from your pork supplier whether the bacon you have for sale has any sugar added to it? From my research, most bacon (whether store bought or from butcher that cures their own bacon in house) has been cured in a brine which contains sugar. Just curious if yours is too.
By Squad 31 Jan 2012
Ok… Mamacita, go with Sow Belly. Asian markets/delis carry it. Much better, no salt, no sugar, and uncured. But the same fatty goodness that we all love in Bacon.
As for the battle paleo…. hmm. Well, having a bit more time at home has meant that I eat more. Typically, I am a grazer/snacker, but without having my old work schedule, this has lead to more of both. Patty has now decided that I need to eat more than him, but this is starting to backfire as my skinny (paleo) jeans seem to have developed a muffin top. (WTF?!?)
My goal is to get to CFV more often (4x/wk) and get to freaking BED earlier (thank you Robb Wolf). Drink a little less booze, and a little more water.
The big cheats: chocolate, nuts, fruit and of course alcohol. A weekend away at a hockey tournament=chips. (baked, yes… but still a root vegetable)
Game on kids…. game on.
By patty 31 Jan 2012
Dear Robb
The damn sleep and metabolic derangement………..It is an issue
What can I do? My girl is a eating / drinking machine, I might lose her if I give up alcohol. Apparently I am quite boring…..she likes me better when I have a few.
Equally distressing
I may lose all my friends and my business
Socially….I am better
mentally I am more creative
I will not stop having a few drinks….and maybe a binge every once in a while to clear up any build up in the emotional system.
I will start to eat less
But what is really needed here is a support group
It is time to start a revolution.

Patty, fear not, what you speak of already exists!!! Unfortunately its 6,000 miles East of Vancouver, across the Atlantic.
Its called Ireland…its also a good place to buy property at the moment, house prices are down 54%.

What has been the hardest thing so far?
Always feeling hungry, and unsatisfied, and sad that I can’t eat nachos. That being said, I have not yet cheated. Because I’m stubborn like that.
What are your plans/goals for the next three weeks?
This week marks not only the halfway point of the paleo challenge for me, but also my first day back at work after a year off with my baby girl. Fuck, this is going to suck. And to top it off, I can’t eat nachos. My plan: Survive. Maybe even thrive. But most of all, try not to cry every morning on the way to work.
How are you going to hold yourself and your team accountable for the last few weeks??
Tim is the most determined mo-fo I’ve ever seen. He is in Paleo Beast Mode. You should all be afraid. Fat Panda fears his determination and even moreso his rage if we don’t win this thing. Therefore Panda is eating super strict paleo, meat and veggies, and that’s it. And he and Tim have inches to lose, people. Many inches! As for me….I’m counting the days until my first plate of nachos.
Wendy
PS: Nachos.
By Squad 31 Jan 2012
Wendy… It is obvious that you are a very focused person. I dig that about you. However, you have now released the secret weapon to get you to do anything: Nachos!
I will keep that in the bank. I make excellent nachos.
(sadly, I have too much integrity to ambush your paleo team by bringing nachos to the school… sadly….)

Best quote for a long time from Smooth Worm…
“Patty, fear not, what you speak of already exists!!! Unfortunately its 6,000 miles East of Vancouver, across the Atlantic. Its called Ireland”
Being of Irish decent, with a few uncles whose meals consisted mainly of Guinness with whisky as desert, I can relate to that comment.
P.S. Smooth Worm??? Where did that nickname come from?????

…obviously prof has never been hit on by The Smooth Worm.

Team Paleo Challenge has definitely been a challenge for me so far. I underestimated how much I enjoy bread and noodles. I’ve managed to stick with the program and also restrict nuts, seeds, and fruit. I’m down a few pounds and ready to lose more. In fact, I’ve lost so many inches it’s really pointless for any other team to try and stick in this competition. I recommend that everyone bow out and reward themselves tonight with a loaf of fresh baked bread and a jar of nutella….maybe some yummy pasta…and don’t forget the chips too!
The hardest thing so far has been to not punch Tim in the face for roping me into this challenge. The second hardest thing was not taking a piece of pizza offered to me at lunch. My hand was halfway to the box before my brain kicked in.
My plan for the next three weeks is to focus on eating leaner cuts of meat and thinking of Tim’s face every time I’m tempted to jump ship.
The Big Bahunas don’t quit!
Once again, Tim’s face is haunting my dreams.
Fat Panda representing The Big Bahunas!

I am finding it fun to see the creative ways people are paleoing. The hard part is keeping up strict paleo for the full 6 weeks. I need an immediate weigh-in to scare me off dark chocolate. I still do berries in the am. Had a few weekends of drinking thanks to the CFV community I think for the next 2 1/2 weeks I will reduce fruit, eat more veg and walk more in addition to CFV classes. That’s the plan. Thanks everyone for your ideas and inspiration!
